No. 9 Women's Soccer Beats Virginia Tech 2-0

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Santa Clara women's soccer wrapped-up its trip to Virginia with a 2-0 win over Virginia Tech on Sunday.

The Broncos (3-1-2) got a first half goal from Izzy D'Aquila and a second half tally from Skylar Smith with Sally Menti, Alex Loera, and Kelsey Turnbow each adding an assist. Santa Clara made the most of its chances, finding the back of the net on both shots on goal, while firing off eight shots in total.

The Hokies (4-2) managed to put six of their 11 shots on target but were thwarted by Marlee Nicolos each time. Emily Gray was their most dangerous player, getting off six shots, four on target.

The first goal came in the 25th minute to put the Broncos on top 1-0. Menti found D'Aquila who finished in the bottom right of the goal.

In the 52nd minute, Turnbow crossed a ball to Loera who one-timed a pass to Smith. Smith was able to finish with her left foot and give the Broncos a 2-0 lead.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara is now 2-0-1 all-time against Virginia.
  • Kelsey Turnbow remains in sixth place in career goals with 49, behind No. 5 Mikka Hansen and her 52 goals. She moved past Nikki Serlenga for 10th all-time at Santa Clara with 28 assists. Next is Osborne with 34. Turnbow is also at 124 points, which is seventh. Next is Aly Wagner's 127.
