SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's soccer stayed hot and picked up its fourth consecutive victory in a 2-0 match against San Francisco on Saturday afternoon at home.
The Broncos (7-4-2, 4-0 WCC) were the aggressors from the opening whistle and were on the front foot for almost the entire 90 minutes. They finished the match with 22 shots, 11 on frame, while allowing the Dons (5-6-2, 1-3 WCC) just three shots with one coming on target.
The goals came from Kelsey Turnbow and Kaile Halvorsen with Alex Loera, Makoto Nezu, and Lucy Mitchell all picking up assists.
The San Francisco goalkeeper, Molly Eby, was the only thing that prevented a blowout. She made nine saves on the day, several of the spectacular variety.
On the other side, Felicity Baker picked up her first collegiate shutout and win.
Turnbow scored the first goal of the game in the 15th to put the Broncos on top 1-0. Mitchell found Turnbow in the box who took a touch and hit a shot high and inside the far post.
The second goal came in the 30th off the foot of Halvorsen. Nezu started the play and found Loera who sent a long pass to Halvorsen in the box. She proceeded to knock it into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
NOTES
- Santa Clara is now 36-2-1 all-time against San Francisco.
- Kelsey Turnbow moved into a tie for fifth place with 52 goals, tying No. 5 Mikka Hansen. She is 10th all-time at Santa Clara with 29 assists. Next is Osborne with 34. Turnbow is also at 133 points, good for fifth. In fourth is Jenny Fechner with 156.
- The 2001 National Championship team was honored at halftime and the 2020 National Championship team received their rings in a postmatch ceremony.
