Huge Second Half Gives Women's Soccer Win Over Saint Mary's

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Despite dominating on offense, Santa Clara women's soccer found itself down 1-0 at halftime before a monster second half lifted them to a 3-1 victory over Saint Mary's on Saturday afternoon.

The Broncos (7-6-1, 4-0 WCC) got goals from Isabel Dehakiz in the 65th to tie the game, Colby Barnett in the 73rd to go ahead, and Izzy D'Aquila in the 82nd for some insurance. D'Aquila also added two assists with Barnett and Annie Karich contributing one each.

The Gaels (5-3-5, 1-1-2 WCC) lone goal came in the 40th minute off a penalty kick taken by Nayeli Diaz. They didn't attempt their second shot of the match until the 77th minute.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara had a 23-4 edge in shots and a 14-2 advantage in shots on target.
  • The Broncos drew 12 corner kicks while surrendering none.
  • It was the first goal of the year for Dehakiz and Barnett.
  • Marlee Nicolos made one save.
  • Taylor Poland had an impressive day, making 11 saves to keep her team within striking distance but it was still the first time the team had given up three goals in a match.
  • D'Aquila moved into seventh place all-time in program history with 46 career goals, passing Sofia Huerta (45, 2011-14). Next up is Mikka Hansen (1993-96) with 52. She would become just the seventh Bronco with 50-plus career goals.
  • D'Aquila moved into 10th in program history with 106 points, passing Ern Martinez (1993-96) with 104 points. Next is Huerta's 109.
  • D'Aquila has scored in four matches in a row and in six of the last seven. Over the span she has scored 13 times. It is the 16th time in Santa Clara history has scored in at least four consecutive matches.
  • Her 15 goals ties her career-high set in 2019.
  • Jerry Smith now has 530 wins.
  • Santa Clara is now 38-3-5 all-time vs. Saint Mary's.
