Softball Splits a Pair on Friday’s Silicon Valley Classic I Tournament

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -  Santa Clara softball split the two games on the first day of the Silicon Valley Classic I Tournament on Friday, falling to Sacramento State, 8-0, before winning the second game, 5-4, over Utah State.

GAME 1: Sacramento State 8 - Santa Clara 0 (six innings)
The game between Sacramento State and Santa Clara was scoreless through the first five frames with Hannah Edwards in the circle for the Broncos (6-7) and Marissa Bertuccio for the Hornets (4-7) holding the opposition to a total of five hits.

In the sixth, Sacramento State exploded for eight runs on six hits and two Bronco errors to break the deadlock.  Eleven Hornets came to bat in the frame that included four RBI singles and a three-run home run by pinch-hitter Caroline Evans to cap the inning.

Amber Rodriquez, who had one of the RBI singles in the sixth, finished 3-for-3.

Bertuccio (3-1) gave up a one out double to Emma Bickford in the bottom of the sixth but retired the next two batters to toss a three-hit shutout in a six inning run-rule game.

Edwards dropped to 3-4 on the season giving up six runs, three earned over 5 2/3 innings.

Bickford had two of the three hits for the Broncos.

GAME 2: Santa Clara 5  - Utah State 4
Regan Dias starred in the circle and with the bat in Santa Clara's 5-4 victory over Utah State in the night game.

Dias (1-1) threw 152 pitches over seven innings to earn a complete game victory, scattering seven hits, four runs, three earned with six walks and four strikeouts.

With the game tied at 3-all in the bottom of the fifth, Dias came through with the go ahead RBI singling home Ferreira to put the Broncos up 4-3.  Facing the Aggies reliever Mia Reynolds, Ferreira led off the inning with a double to the right center gap.  Dias followed by a single down the right field line to plate Ferreira.  Morgan Salmon followed with a double that advanced Dias to third before Sammy Needham laid down a bunt that scored Dias to give the Broncos (7-7) a two-run cushion.

In the top of the sixth, the Aggies (4-6) got a run back on Mazie Macfarlane's RBI grounder to cut the SCU lead to 5-4.

Clinging onto a one run lead in the seventh, Dias struck out the first two batters she faced before walking the potential tying run.  However, she got Bri Lerma to pop out to end the game.

Reynolds (2-3) who gave up the two runs in the fifth was the losing pitcher.

The top three batters in the lineup, Ashley Trierweiler, Ferreira and Dias each went 2-for-4 with five total runs scored.  Salmon also had two hits in the evening.

Ariel Lopez was a thorn on the side for Dias going 4-for-4 with an RBI.
