Saturday Split for Softball

STOCKTON, Calif. – Santa Clara softball played in a pair of five inning run-rule games, winning the first game against Marist 9-1 before falling to Iowa State 13-2 in a pair of neutral site games on the campus of the University of the Pacific on Saturday.

GAME 1: Santa Clara 9 - Marist 1 (five innings)
Santa Clara (13-17) exploded for nine runs in the opening inning sending 13 batters to the plate en route to a 9-1 win over Marist (10-15) in the first game at Bill Simoni Field.

The Broncos collected six hits and drew three walks against Red Foxes' starter Maddie Pleasants in the big inning.  The leadoff batter Ashley Trierweiler scored twice, leading the game off with a walk and singling in two runs in her second at bat.  Lauren LaHood also drove in two runs on a double for the only extra base hit of the frame.

In the circle, Hannah Edwards (5-6) had an economical outing with 50 pitches over four innings of work, allowing four hits and did not walk a batter to pick up the win.  The only blemish was a solo home run she gave up to Caroline Baratta in the bottom of the fourth.

Kelsi Rice came in relief to close out the fifth retiring the three Marist batters she faced in order.

Allyson Ferreira, Sarah Ellersick and Bailey McLaughlin each had two hits in the game and eight Broncos scored.

Sam Freeland went 2-for-4 for Marist.

Pleansants (3-12) was the losing pitching throwing all five innings and giving up nine hits, nine runs, seven earned, while walking four and striking out six.

GAME 2: Iowa State 13 - Santa Clara 2 (five innings)
In the second game of the day, Iowa State (19-10) banged out 12 hits and Karlie Charles allowed two runs over five innings in the Cyclones 13-2 win over Santa Clara (13-18).

Carli Spelhaug led off the bottom of the first with a home run against Broncos starter Regan Dias as part of a three run inning and kept the offensive pressure throughout the game.

The Cyclones added four more runs on three hits in the second, knocking out Dias with Spelhaug again the middle of the action with an RBI single.

Spelhaug finished 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs.

Ahead 7-0 in the fourth, Mikayla Ramos hit a three-run home run against reliever Kelsi Rice as part of a six run inning to put the game out of reach.

The Broncos were held to just one hit through the first four innings but came up with three hits in the fifth including a two RBI single by Ashley Trierweiler to spoil Charles' shutout bid.
