Softball Defeats North Dakota 9-1 on Sunday

MORGAGA, Calif.Hannah Edwards threw six strong innings while the top half of the lineup shouldered the offense in Santa Clara softball's 9-1 win over North Dakota on Sunday at Cottrell Field in a neutral site game.

Edwards (6-6) allowed just four hits and an unearned run to pick up her second win in as many days.

Offensively, the Broncos collected 13 hits with the one through five hitters getting 10 of them and driving in seven runs.  Leadoff batter Ashley Trierweiler went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs while Allyson Ferreira and Emma Bickford each went 2-for-4.  Bickford drove in a game-high three runs.

The Broncos (14-18) opened up the scoring in the top of the first on three-straight singles by Trierweiler, Ferreira and Bickford followed by Morgan Salmon's RBI grounder to go up 2-0.

In the second, Santa Clara doubled its lead to 4-0 on RBI singles by Trierweiler and Ferreira to knock out North Dakota's starting pitcher Jackie Albrecht.  Bailey McLaughlin, the ninth batter, drew a two out walk and stole second before coming home on Trierweiler's base hit.

Bickford drove in two more runs in the sixth to push the Broncos advantage to 7-0, plating McLaughlin and Trierweiler who started the inning with back-to-back singles.

The Fighting Hawks (10-21) took advantage of a Broncos error in the bottom of the sixth to push a run across on Cassie Castaneda's sacrifice fly RBI and spoil Edwards' shutout bid.

Albrecht (3-6) was the losing pitcher on record giving up four runs on five hits and one walk over 1 2/3 innings.  Chevelle Sartin and Madison Pederson each had two hits for North Dakota.
