Softball Season Comes to a Close with a Loss at San Diego

SAN DIEGO - The 2023 season for Santa Clara softball came to a close with a 2-1 loss to San Diego on Sunday in the rubber match of the West Coast Conference series as the Toreros got a couple of clutch at-bats in the late innings and Madison Earnshaw threw a complete game.

Earnshaw allowed just four hits, one run and walked three over seven innings to move to 9-6 on the year.

Trailing 1-0, San Diego (21-28-1, 6-6 WCC) scored a run in the fifth and the sixth innings on an RBI double by Izzy Owen and a sacrifice fly by Clareese Santiago to go up 2-1.

Santa Clara (23-26, 4-11 WCC) had an opportunity in the top half of the seventh when Ashley Trierweiler came to the plate with two outs and runners at first and second.  However, Earnshaw induced a grounder to close out the game after giving up an RBI single to Trierweiler earlier in the game.

In the top of the third, Trierweiler drove in the lone Bronco run when she singled up the middle to plate Regan Dias, who led off the inning with a base hit, stole second and moved to third on a grounder.

Trierweiler went 1-for-4 and finished the year with a .486 batting average.

Hazyl Gray (5-8) took the loss giving up the run in the sixth.
