Seven Softball Student-Athletes Named WCC All-Academic

West Coast Conference Release

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Seven Santa Clara softball student-athletes were named West Coast Conference All-Academic on Thursday.  Emma Bickford, Sammy Needham and Ashley Trierweiler were nabbed to the All-Academic Team and four – Hannah Edwards, Allyson Ferreira, Bailey McLaughlin and Morgan Salmon – were named as honorable mentions.

Three Broncos occupy the 12-member All-Academic Team tying for the highest total along with Pacific.

At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while being a starter or important reserve (participate in at least 50 percent of the institution's completed contests) with legitimate athletic credentials and have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with at least one year in residence completed at the nominating institution.

Bickford has a cumulative grade point average of 3.547 while pursuing an MBA to earn her first All-Academic Team selection as she was previously named honorable mention twice, in 2021 and 2022.  Bickford batted .301 on the year in 45 games to tie for eighth in the WCC and was even better in conference play with a .318 average while committing just one error for a .974 fielding percentage at third base.  A strong contact hitter, Bickford struck out just seven times all year in 143 at-bats and was named second-team All-WCC.

Needham has a 3.98 GPA in MA Educational Leadership and it is the second time being named to the All-Academic Team.  The graduate student posted the third highest on-base percentage at .432 and tied for eighth in the league with 25 RBIs.  She also had a 24-game on-base streak during the season.

Another student-athlete named to the All-Academic Team for the second-straight season is Trierweiler.  Just this week, she has garnered two All-American recognitions, being named second-team All-American by D1Softball and a third-team recognition by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).  The Santa Clara University class of 2023 valedictorian semifinalist has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA with a double major in child studies and psychology.

Edwards has a 3.567 GPA while majoring in psychology to earn her first All-Academic honorable mention recognition.  The right-handed hurler led the Broncos with a 2.96 ERA while posting a 7-5 record with a save in 28 appearances.

Ferreira was named All-Academic honorable mention for the second-straight year with a 3.27 GPA while pursuing an MBA.  The Bronco middle infielder batted a career-high .297 in 38 games this season and had the third highest on-base percentage on the team at .378

McLaughlin has a 3.592 GPA in mechanical engineering to earn an honorable mention recognition for the second year in a row.  McLaughlin played in 46 games and had a .277 batting average and was seventh in the WCC with 12 stolen bases.

Salmon, a sophomore, was named honorable mention in her first eligible season for the league's All-Academic recognition.  The SCU middle infielder has a 3.578 GPA in child studies and had a slashline of .285/.342/.500 in 48 games.  She led the team and was second in the WCC with 38 RBIs.
