SAN DIEGO – San Diego picked up four singles wins, including the match clincher by No. 65-ranked Solymar Colling, to defeat Santa Clara women's tennis 4-2 in the West Coast Conference opener on Saturday.
Playing on court one, Colling beat Maddie Pothoff 6-4, 6-1.
For the Broncos, Elvena Gevargiz picked up two wins.
Santa Clara (4-4, 0-1) got off to a good start winning the doubles point against the 40th-ranked team in the nation. Madison Clarke and Elvena Gevargiz took down Maria Tyrina and Gemma Garcia 6-3 on court two followed by Pothoff and Katya Tabachnik's doubles-point clincher over Colling and Helena Francati 6-3 on court one.
However, the bottom of the singles lineup turned the tide for San Diego (7-4, 1-0) when they won the first three matches.
On court six, Kati Kukaras blanked Lindsey Pesqueira 6-0, 6-0 to even the team score at 1-all. Tyrina defeated Jamie Schroer 6-2, 6-2 on court four before Francati beat Tabachnik 6-1, 6-4 to give the Toreros their third straight singles victory.
Gevargiz temporarily put a halt to the Toreros momentum with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Gemma Garcia on court three to close the gap to 3-2 before Colling's clincher.
