SANTA CLARA, Calif. - With the team score knotted at 3-all, Giulia Hayer came up on top in a tightly contested match to clinch Santa Clara women's tennis' 4-3 win over Portland in a West Coast Conference bout on Friday.
Playing on court six, Hayer battled Angela Schuster to a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3) victory before being mobbed on the court by her teammates.
After dropping the doubles point, Santa Clara (8-5, 2-1 WCC) picked up the first two singles wins by JennaMarie Gordon and Jamie Schroer to take a 2-1 lead.
Portland (6-8, 1-2 WCC) went back ahead 3-2 on victories by Aleks Dimitrijevic and Iva Zelic but the Broncos tied it up on Velizara Fileva's win over Rimona Rouf to set the stage for Hayer.
Hayer also won her doubles match, while paired with Katherine Petty, for the only Bronco to pick up two wins on the day.
