Volleyball Downed on the Road at Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. — The Santa Clara University volleyball team ran into a frustrated Pepperdine team on Thursday night, with the Waves coming off a loss to last-place Gonzaga last weekend. The Waves exercised their frustrations on the Broncos, sweeping them, 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-20), in a West Coast Conference matchup at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Julia Sangiacomo surpassed the 1,400 career kills mark Thursday night for Santa Clara (8-15, 4-7 WCC) with a team-high 11 on Thursday, giving her 1,401 for her career. She currently sits sixth all-time in the Santa Clara record book, 57 behind fifth place. She was three digs away from another double-double with seven and also added a block.

Nive Tuileta also nearly had a double-double with 26 assists and six digs while adding four blocks. Kat Georgiadis had a team-high nine digs and chipped in two assists.

Pepperdine (16-6, 7-4 WCC) hit .316 for the match, though the Broncos' defense slowly wore it down, lowering the Waves' hitting percentage by 74 points from the first to the third set. Three Waves reached double-digit kills, led by Vanessa Polk's 12. Polk also hit an impressive .647 with only one error. Isabel Zelaya had a match-high 37 assists and added eight digs and three kills.

The Broncos made a strong push towards the end of the third set, scoring four points in a row to fight off four consecutive match points. A block and a kill from Lia Okammor, a service ace from Hayden Goodman and a Pepperdine error powered the Broncos' surge. But the Waves wrapped things up with a kill from Grace Chillingworth to win the set, 25-20.

Santa Clara next faces LMU on Saturday in Los Angeles. Fans can find all live coverage links on the Broncos' schedule page.
