San Jose State Defeats Women’s Water Polo

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Olga Descalzi Portell had six goals and Sierra Painter added four to lead San Jose State to a 17-7 victory over Santa Clara women's water polo on Sunday.

Descalzi Portell fueled the key run, scoring four straight goals, including three in the opening 3 minutes of the second quarter, to extend the lead to 7-1.

Painter took over in the third quarter, striking for three goals.

Mia Battilega tallied a career-high three goals for the Broncos who had some scoring opportunities but went 3-for-9 with the extra attacker and made only 1 of 3 attempts on 5-meter penalties.

Hannah Henry had saves in the opening half to earn the victory for the Spartans who were 5-for-6 with the man advantage and had a 57 percent shooting percentage.

• Goalie Grace Kavanagh was joined in the Santa Clara starting lineup by Abby Fleming, Mia Battilega, Malena Nguyen, Elle Fredrickson, Kelly Frumkin and Gabi Sicat.
