Santa Clara Season Stats

In its second game of the Edward Jones CBE Hall of Fame Classic, Santa Clara defeated USC Upstate 85-65 with Marc Trasolini scoring a game-high 18 points on Tuesday night in the Leavey Center.  Santa Clara is 3-0 and USC Upstate is 1-3.  Utah Valley (3-2) defeated Eastern Washington (0-4) in the second game of the night 86-83.

Santa Clara plays Utah Valley Wednesday night at 8:15 pm and Eastern Washington at 4:15 on Friday to finish play in the CBE Classic. Both games will be the second games of the day in the CBE Classic at the Leavey Center.  Eastern Washington will face USC Upstate in the 6 pm game on Wednesday and USC Upstate will face Utah Valley in the 2 pm game on Friday.

"We showed some maturity as a team with our guys off the bench doing a good job when we got into some foul trouble in the first half," said Bronco head coach Kerry Keating.  "USC Upstate is a tournament team. I expect them to win their conference again. They have a lot of experienced players, they were really tough."

Santa Clara shot 53.1 percent from the field (26 of 49), including 42.1 percent from beyond the arc (8 of 19).  The Broncos collected 18 assists, 36 rebounds, five steals, four blocks and had 12 turnovers.  USC Upstate shot 35.6 percent from the field (21 of 59), including 12.5 percent from beyond the arc (2 of 16).  The Spartans collected 14 assists, 34 rebounds, five steals, four blocks and had 14 turnovers.

Trasolini led the Broncos with 18 points, including shooting 8-8 from the free throw line. He also collected seven rebounds and an assist. Evan Roquemore scored 15 points, adding five assists.  Raymond Cowels III scored 11 and Kevin Foster added eight with five assists and three steals.  Brandon Clark scored 11 with four assists.

"We showed a lot of trust and faith in each other tonight," said Keating.

USC Upstate was led by Torrey Craig's 17 points.  Ricardo Glenn scored nine points and 10 rebounds.  Adrian Rodgers scored 12 and Babatunde Olumuyiwa added eight point and eight rebounds.

To start the game, Trasolini scored the first 10 Bronco points.  Trasolini's dunk at 19:26 started it.  Trasolini was fouled at 17:39 and converted both to put SCU up 4-0.  After the Spartans scored a jumper, Trasolini was fouled again shooting and knocked down both to put SCU up 6-2.  UPST's Craig hit a three at 16:58.

Trasolini answered inside again on back-to-back possessions.  Roquemore scored inside at 15:14 to go up 12-5.

Upstate scored inside at 13:36 and at the top of the key at 12:38 to pull within three, 12-8 Broncos.  B. Clark's three from the corner stopped the run at 11:58. 

Trasolini was fouled again inside and he converted both to score his 11th point of the night at 10:10 (17-9 Broncos).

Roquemore dunked at 8:02 to put SCU up 19-11.  After the Spartans scored a free throw, B. Clark dumped it in inside and Robert Garrett grabbed a rebound and stuffed it in for two at 6:54 to put SCU up 11, 23-12.

Denzel Johnson's two free throws made it 28-17 at 4:11.  Atanga scored his first throw and missed the second with Roquemore rebounding it.  J. Clarke converted a three at 3:28 to put the Broncos up 32-17 at 3:28.  Rodgers scored a pair of free throws at 1:46 to make it 32-19 as the team's headed to the lockerroom at halftime.

In the first half, Santa Clara shot 43.5 percent from the field (10 of 23), including 20.0 percent from beyond the arc (2 of 10).  The Broncos collected six assists, 19 rebounds, four steals, three blocks and had eight turnovers.  USC Upstate shot 26.9 percent from the field (7 of 26), including 12.5 percent from beyond the arc (1 of 8).  The Spartans collected three assists, 18 rebounds, one steal, two blocks and had 11 turnovers.

Trasolini led all scorers with 12 points.  Atanga collected six rebounds.  Craig had 11 first-half points for the Spartans and Glenn grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

"We were able to overcome a slow start by Kevin Foster, who had no points in the first half due to foul trouble," added Keating.  "Our bench did a good job of handling the situation that presented itself and stepped up."

Cowels III hit a three at 19:12 to open the second half.  After Upstate scored a bucket, Roquemore scored a three-point play at 18:14.  He followed it with a three pointer at 17:24 to put SCU up 41-21.

Foster laid if off the glass at 16:36 to score his first points.  After the Spartans scored a couple of baskets, Trasolini dunked it off a dandy pass by Cowels III at 15:21.  Cowels III crushed it for three to put SCU up 50-27 at 13:07.

Roquemore scored a pair of free throws at 12:13 before Upstate scored six straight.

B. Clark's pair of free throws at 10:51 made it 54-35. Upstate dunked it on back-to-back possessions and were down 54-39 at 9:36 when Coach Keating called for time.

B. Clark scored back-to-back pairs of free throws to put SCU up 58-41.  Johnson scored inside at 8:20.

Foster scored a three at 7:58 to put the Broncos up 20.  Trasolini scored his 16th point of the game at 7:19. After Cowels III scored a bucket, Foster scored a three at 5:14 to put SCU up 73-54.

John McArthur scored inside at 3:31 to put SCU up by 20 again, 77-57.
