Utah Valley Hangs On To Defeat Eastern Washington

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Utah Valley overcame an 11-point halftime deficit and held on to beat Eastern Washington 86-83 Tuesday night at the Leavey Center on the Santa Clara University campus in the second game of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.

Utah Valley (3-2) used a 34-11 run at the start of the second half take its largest lead of the game, 66-54 with 9:41 left.

Ben Aird scored a game-high 25 points, 13 in the second half, and was one of five Wolverines to notch double figures.

Nick Thompson chipped in with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Alfonzo Hubbard added 16, Jason Johnson scored 18 and Antoine Hosley had 10.

Eastern Washington's Danny Powell nailed a three with 50 seconds on the clock, and Kevin Winford followed with a layup to cut the Wolverines lead to 81-80. The Wolverines answered with a layup and three free throws to pull out the win.

Eastern Washington (0-4) pulled ahead midway in the first, and led by as many as 12. The Eagles hit 7 of 20 three pointers with Colin Chiverton hitting 3 of 5.

The Eagles chilled in the second half connecting on 31 percent of their field goals and just 18.2 percent of three point attempts (4 of 22).

Chiverton, the 2012 Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year, set the pace early for the Eagles, wasting just 13 seconds before putting Eastern Washington up 3-0 with a three from downtown. The San Jose, Calif. native out of Archbishop Mitty finished with13 points. His deep three with 15:20 left in the first half gave the Eagles a 15-10 lead.

Venky Jois led the Eagles with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Justin Crosgile and Jeffrey Forbes each had 13 and Martin Seiferth added 14.
Eastern Washington, coming off an 88-66 loss at St. Mary's (Calif.) on Nov. 18, poured in 43 points in the first, the most the squad has drained this season before the break.

In the first game of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic, Santa Clara beat USC Upstate 85-65 behind redshirt senior Marc Trasolini's 18 points. USC Upstate was paced by Torrey Craig, with 17.

Utah Valley is set to join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) next year.
