Tommy Nance and His Love for the Broncos
SANTA CLARA, Calif. –The Broncos have seven seniors that are playing hard for their last season on the SCU campus. One of the seniors, Tommy Nance, joined the Broncos as a transfer last season and is looking forward to having a great last season. Nance picked up the win in Sata Clara’s 12-3 win against San Diego State University on Tuesday night.
Nance (TN) shared with SantaClaraBroncos.com (SCB) what his experiences been like as a Bronco, his love for SCU and asked the community to come and support the team, as they play hard on the field. Even though he was only a Bronco for two seasons, Nance has a strong connection with the team and sends a great message to the future Broncos.

In an offensive explosion, including six runs in the fifth inning, Santa Clara defeated San Diego State 12-3 on Tuesday at Schott Stadium. The Broncos are now 4-4 while the Aztecs are 3-5, having swept a three-game series at the preseason WCC favorite, San Diego, to start the season.

Bronco Baseball Hosts Five Games At Schott This Week - Starting With San Diego State On Tuesday
With the 2013 college baseball season in full swing, Santa Clara will host five games this week. The Broncos welcome San Diego State on Tues., Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. and Wed., Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. to Schott Stadium before a three-game series over the weekend with Northern Colorado.
Last week Santa Clara took one of three from Illinois-Chicago to move to 3-4 on the young season. Tommy Nance (0-0, 0.00) has had the best start for Santa Clara this season. Nance tossed 4.0 shutout innings with two strikeouts on just 34 pitches against Cal Poly on Feb. 18. Nance will make two starts this week, one vs. San Diego State and one vs. Northern Colorado.

Bronco Baseball at the Next Level: Daniel Nava '06 Thriving for Red Sox After Call-Up
Outfielder Daniel Nava ’06 is off to a torrid start for the Boston Red Sox after being summoned from Triple-A Pawtucket. Since his May 10 call-up, the Redwood City native has been a fixture in the starting lineup, and is batting a whopping .350 with 9 R, 11 RBI and two homeruns in 14 games. He also has four doubles, 10 BB, a .491 on-base percentage, a .600 slugging percentage and an on-base plus slugging (OPS) of 1.091. With seven outfielders currently on the disabled list, Nava has provided much needed stability and production in his first MLB action since 2010.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – With only a month of games left to play, the Santa Clara baseball season is on the home stretch of the 2012 baseball season. SantaClaraBroncos.com (SCB) was able to catch up with sophomore shortstop, Greg Harisis (GH), to talk about his experience as a student-athlete and how he plans to help the Broncos finish the season. Harisis has started 17 games while making 26 appearances overall and leads the team with a .412 (28-68) batting average. He has scored 18 runs to go with seven RBI and four doubles. This past weekend, Harisis blasted his first career home run on April 28 vs. Saint Mary’s over the right field wall at Schott Stadium. He has a terrific .467 on-base percentage that is helped by his six walks.

As the Bronco baseball operations assistant for SCU Kellen Lee has his plate full, especially with the transition from player to administrator. Lee previously played catcher for the now SCU Baseball Coach Dan O’Brien at UC San Diego, where Lee graduated with a double major in Communications and Psychology in 2011. Lee finished his career with a .996 fielding percentage and now is looking towards an administrative baseball career here at SCU.

Third Annual Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament Set For Weekend
The third annual Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament, co-hosted by Santa Clara and San Jose State, will be held from Mar. 8-11 on the campuses of Santa Clara and San Jose State Universities. The tournament is named after the late John F. (Jack) Gifford, an avid baseball fan and long-time supporter of several college programs all around the Bay Area, as well as at his alma mater, UCLA. He who passed away in January of 2010.

Jacobe Ready and Prepared for Freshman Season
C.J. Jacobe’s dream of playing professional baseball came true when he was drafted by the Oakland A’s in the 45th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Even though he was happy and honored to be drafted, he decided to continue to work on improving his skills to become an even better player. As a result, the Vacaville, Calif. native enrolled at Santa Clara in Sept. and is a freshman on the baseball team.

Bronco Baseball Caps Undefeated Weekend With Win Over Louisiana-Lafayette
The Dan O'Brien era has started with a bang as the Broncos swept three games this weekend in Texas at the Bobcat Invitational vs. quality opponents. On Sunday the Broncos defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 8-5. On Saturday the Broncos defeated Texas State 5-4 in 13 innings and then Wichita State 2-1 in 12 innings.
RHP Paul Twining (2-0; 4.50) picked up his second win of the weekend by pitching an inning in relief. RHP Mike Couch (0-0; 3.18) pitched 5.0 innings as the starter and only allowed two runs while striking out seven. The eighth inning saw nine runs scored after only four had been scored the previous seven innings.

In its second extra-inning game of the day, Santa Clara baseball (2-0) beat Wichita State (1-1) by a final score of 7-1. RHP Brock Simon (0-0) was turned in a terrific for the Broncos by going 8.0 innings, allowing four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. LHP Powell Fansler (1-0; 0.00) picked up the win by going 3.0 innings and allowing four hits with two strikeouts. Santa Clara finally broke through with five runs in top of the 12th to put the game away.

Meet New Bronco Assistant Baseball Coach Mike Oseguera
When new Bronco head baseball coach Dan O'Brien came to Santa Clara from UC San Diego he didn't have to look far for one of his assistant coaches. Mike Oseguera (MO), a 2003 graduate of the University of San Diego, coached under O'Brien at UCSD for the past eight years where the Tritons compiled an overall record of 304-149 (.671) and played in eight consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association conference tournaments, collecting four wins (2005, 2009-11). Eddie Smith (ES) has a chair from the 2011 College World Series sitting in his office which he got as a coach on the University of Virginia team that made it to Omaha. SCU Places Record Number on 10th annual WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll
With the conclusion of the 2010-11 academic year, the West Coast Conference is proud to announce the 10th annual WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll, which recognizes those student-athletes that possess at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. A record number 122 Bronco student-athletes made the list, besting last year's mark of 118. Santa Clara had 21 on the Gold list, 21 on the Silver list and 80 on the Bronze list. Santa Clara's student-athletes recorded a school-best 3.14 GPA during the Spring 2011 quarter as well.

After a solid rookie campaign, C/OF Zach Looney has taken his talents to East Texas for the summer. The young catcher is honing his skills in preparation for his sophomore season on the Mission Campus. Santa Clara Names Two-Time National Division II Head Coach Dan O'Brien As Head Baseball Coach
A two-time Division II National Coach of the Year, Santa Clara University announced Thurs., June 30 it has hired Dan O'Brien as the new Bronco head baseball coach. O'Brien has spent the last 14 seasons as the head coach at UC San Diego, building that program into one of the premier programs at the NCAA Division II level. Dan O'Brien, the 36th head coach in school history in a baseball program that dates back to 1883, replaces Mark O'Brien after he stepped down in early June after 10 years at the Bronco helm.

Santa Clara (17-33; 4-16 WCC) lost a tight 2-1 game to the Portland Pilots (23-30; 10-10 WCC). There was no scoring until the ninth inning when the Broncos scored a run but Portland was able to rally for two in the bottom of the inning. J.R. Graham (3-5) took the loss while pitching 8.2 innings and allowing two runs, on six hits and five walks with four strikeouts. Stephen Takahashi lead the offense with two hits and a RBI.

Santa Clara (16-27; 3-11 WCC) dropped a 5-4 decision on Saturday in Malibu to the Pepperdine Waves (19-24; 5-6 WCC). Base runners were not a problem for the Broncos, as Santa Clara amassed 13 hits. Lucas Herbst led the Broncos by going 2-5 at the plate with a double and two RBI’s. Justin Viele collected three hits, while Stephen Takahashi, Pat Terry and Zach Looney both provided two. Geoff Klein and Tommy Medica celebrated Senior Day by hitting homeruns to help Santa Clara University beat rival University of San Francisco 12-6 Sunday afternoon at Stephen Schott Stadium. Klein's opposite-field drive scored Medica in the sixth. Medica then added a three-run shot to seal the win during a five-run eighth. The two former WCC batting champs were playing their final home game at SCU.
