Baseball Crowned West Coast Conference Tournament Champions

LAS VEGAS – The Bronco Boys are on top of the West Coast Conference.

Santa Clara baseball (35-18) topped Portland 6-0 on Saturday afternoon to claim the program's first WCC Tournament title and the first championship overall since 1997, the last time they made the NCAA Tournament.

The Broncos will enter the postseason on an eight-game winning streak while having won 17 of their last 20. The 35 wins so far this season are the most since the 1997 campaign when the team won 41.

Brandon Gomez (6-3) was brilliant on the mound for the Broncos. He went 8-plus shutout innings, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out six. Blake Hammond came in and recorded the final three outs to send Santa Clara into a dog pile on the mound.

On offense, Efrain Manzo hit his 17th home run of the year, the most by a Bronco since 2003, a two-run shot in the bottom of the first for all the offense the pitching would need. Eamon Lance added a triple, a run scored, and two RBIs as well with Michael O'Hara crossing the plate twice while also knocking in a run.

After the game, four Broncos were named to the All-Tournament Team with Dawson Brigman being named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Joining him on the all-tournament team was Coleman Brigman, Efrain Manzo, and Gomez.

The Pilots (31-23) starter Ryan Rembisz (1-1) lasted 2 2/3 innings while taking the loss. He gave up three runs, one earned, on two hits with two strikeouts.

Jake Holcroft and Evan Scavotto collected two hits each with three others adding a hit each. All seven Portland hits were singles.
