Late Push Not Enough as Baseball Falls to San Diego

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball was beaten 10-6 by San Diego on Saturday afternoon despite a late push.

The Toreros (9-11-1, 3-2 WCC) got things started in the second with a three-run home run from Kevin Sim and the offense kept rolling, including going back-to-back-to-back in the sixth.

Sim finished the day with two home runs and four RBIs. Angelo Peraza went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBIs, and three runs scored and Austin Smith hit a home run, had two RBIs, and scored three times.

Garrett Rennie (1-2) was great over 7 three-hit innings while walking two and striking out four. His only blemish was a solo home run by Dawson Brigman in the sixth.

The Broncos (12-6, 3-2 WCC) offense came alive in the eighth against the San Diego bullpen, scoring five runs, capped by Robert Hipwell's three-run home run.

Brigman finished the day with three hits and a walk while scoring a pair of runs and Hipwell had the three RBIs. Michael O'Hara also added an RBI.

It was a short start for Brandon Gomez who lasted just 1 1/3 innings and got the loss. After a four-pitch first, an error started the second and Gomez (3-1) couldn't escape the frame. He ended up allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with a walk.

Will Pappas was a bright spot for the pitching staff as he tossed 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing a run on a hit with three strikeouts.
