Baseball Beats Pepperdine to Open Weekend Series

MALIBU, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball won its series opener at Pepperdine 5-3 on Friday afternoon.

After the Broncos (21-15, 8-8 WCC) got an early lead on a home run in the second, the Waves (15-23, 7-12 WCC) took the lead in the bottom of the frame. Santa Clara would come back and score single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings before adding some insurance in the ninth.

Michael O'Hara led the offense with three hits, including a double, a walk, and two RBIs. Robert Hipwell added two hits, with a double as well, and two walks while scoring a run and Coleman Brigman hit a home run as part of a two-hit game.

Blake Hammond (5-1) went 6 innings of one-run relief to pick-up the win. He allowed four hits and four walks while striking out eight. Starter Cole Kitchen went 3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Jack Goodman was the only Pepperdine hitter with multiple hits as he finished 3-for-4 with a double. Connor Bradshaw hit a home run and scored two runs with a pair of walks. Grant Schoen and John Peck added RBIs as well.

Shane Telfer (4-3) started and took the loss. In 4 innings, he gave up three runs on five hits with seven walks and eight strikeouts.
