Baseball Drops Heartbreaker at Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. – Santa Clara baseball suffered a 5-4 walkoff loss at Washington State on Friday afternoon to open a three-game series.

After the Broncos (18-14) battled back to tie the game at 4-all with two runs in the top of the ninth, it took Elijah Hainline just one pitch to send the Cougars (23-13) home victorious with a home run.

Hainline had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and three runs scored. Cam Magee also had two hits and a run scored with Jonah Advincula adding a double and two RBIs.

Chase Grillo (1-1) surrendered the go ahead hit, though it wasn't his runner, in the top of the ninth but ended up with the win. Starter Dakota Hawkins went 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.

Skylar Hales (3-4) took the loss after surrendering the home run. Cole Kitchen lasted 5 innings in the start and gave up three runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

JonJon Berring had a three-hit day with an RBI triple in the ninth and scored a pair of runs. Luetzow knocked in Berring to tie the game and had two RBIs. Malcolm Williams got the rally going with a double, one of two hits on the day. He also scored twice.
