Baseball Falls on Friday Night to BYU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – BYU's offense got going early and kept adding as they beat Santa Clara baseball 13-8 on Friday night.

Early on, the Cougars (13-20, 6-8 WCC) used the long ball, hitting back-to-back bombs in the top of the first to get out in front 3-0. They weren't done, scoring in five of the first six innings and hitting three home runs.

Austin Deming, Cole Gambill, and Ryan Sepede hit the homers with all three also having two hits. Deming and Gambill had three RBIs, as did Ozzie Pratt, with Deming scoring three times and Gambill and Sepede scoring twice each. Each of the top six batters had at least one RBI and eight of the nine starters recorded and least one hit with all nine reaching base safely.

Bryce Robison (4-2) was the beneficiary of the offense and ended up with the win. He surrendered five runs on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Cutter Clawson went the final 3 1/3 to get hit first save of the year.

The Broncos (18-12, 7-7 WCC) briefly made things interesting with four in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a three-run shot from Robert Hipwell, and cut the deficit to 10-5. They rallied again in the ninth by scoring two but that's where it ended.

Hipwell finished the night with a pair of home runs, giving him a team-leading 12 on the year, and four RBIs while also taking two walks. Efrain Manzo had two hits, including a double, and scored a run with Coleman Brigman also had two hits and scored a pair of runs.

Nick Sando (1-2) started and ended up with the loss. In 3 2/3 innings he gave up seven runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
