Baseball Secures Sunday Sweep of Washington

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball swept Washington in a doubleheader on Sunday. The Broncos (2-1) topped the Huskies (1-2) 13-7 in game one and 4-2 in the day's finale.

GAME 1
A late offensive surge, powered by the home run, led the Broncos to a victory in game one. Three runs in each of the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings proved to be the difference.

The rally got started with a home run by Manzo in the sixth and JonJon Berring followed with a two-run double. Manzo added his second bomb of the game in the seventh, this time a two-run blast, and Robert Hipwell added a solo shot of his own. Jack Harnisch capped the scoring with his second homer of the game in the bottom of the eighth.

Harnisch also added a double and scored three runs and Berring had three hits, including a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and three RBIs.

The comeback wouldn't have been possible if not for the stellar relief of Blake Hammond. Hammond (1-0) entered in the fourth and tossed 5 shutout innings. He allowed just one hit while striking out seven against two walks.

The Huskies offense got going early with a run in the first when Will Simpson hit a home run. Washington added three more in the third and two more in the fourth to get out in front 7-3 before Hammond shut things down.

Both Johnny Tincher and Simpson had two hits with two RBIs. Sam DeCarlo added two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI as well.

Reilly McAdams (0-1) took the loss by allowing six runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. Kiefer Lord started and went 5 innings while getting a no-decision. He allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.

Nick Sando made the start for Santa Clara. He allowed five runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts for the no-decision.

GAME 2
The second game of the day was saw the pitchers take control.

Brandon Gomez started for Santa Clara and lasted 4 2/3 innings before being lifted without allowing a run and punching out five with a 2-0 lead. Cade Pilchard came in and a walk and hit batter later the score was tied. Pilchard (1-0) settled down and went 3 1/3 shutout innings with five strikeouts to collect the win. August Souza tossed the ninth for the save.

Stu Flesland III was the starter for Washington, tossing 4 innings and surrendering two runs on two hits with five strikeouts. Grant Cunningham ended up with the loss in 3 1/3 innings of relief. Cunningham (0-1) allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four.

Offensively, Dawson Brigman led the way with three hits, including two doubles, a run scored, and an RBI. Malcolm Williams added two RBIs and Thomas Gould had one in the eight for some insurance.

Cam Clayton had two hits for the huskies with Johnny Tincher and Michael Snyder collecting the RBIs.
