Women's Basketball Topped by LMU at Home

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball dropped a West Coast Conference game 65-51 to LMU Thursday night at home.

The Lions (11-3, 3-0 WCC) used a 22-4 second quarter to take control of the game.

Seven of the eight Lions to play in the period made at least one field goal while the team went 9-for-17 from the field. The Broncos (4-10, 0-3 WCC) shot just 2-for-12 from the field in the period and committed seven turnovers.

A buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Gabby Green at the end of the first started a 15-2 run that made it 30-17. Green scored seven points during the run with Makenzie Cast and Andee Velasco adding 3-pointers.

Green led all scorers with 11 on 4-for-8 shooting from the field and added five rebounds and four assists. Velasco and Cast each scored 10 with Velasco adding seven assists. Bree Alford had a team-high nine boards.

Santa Clara outscored LMU 19-2 over the final 6:27 of the game, cutting the deficit to under 20 points for the first time since 9:49 to go in the third quarter. Six different Broncos scored during the final stretch with Charise Holloway scoring all of her seven points behind a pair of 3-pointers. The Lions committed eight turnovers during the run.

Dru Toleafoa scored a game-high 11 while Morgan McGwire grabbed 11 rebounds and scored nine points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field. Kyla Martin added seven assists and seven points.

  • Santa Clara is now 47-25 all-time against Loyola Marymount.
  • Taylor Berry made her 88th consecutive start.
  • Morgan McGwire is four blocks short of second all-time in Santa Clara history. She has 109 with Lindsey Leo's (2010-13) 113 ahead of her. First place is Annie Garrison (1997-2001) with 207.
  • The Broncos had 15 assists on 18 made baskets.
  • Santa Clara forced 18 turnovers and had nine steals.
