SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The West Coast Conference announced the 2013-14 Women's Tennis All-Academic Team on Thurs., May 1. Bronco senior Katie Le headlines the list with her third straight appearance positing a 3.80 grade point average (GPA) as a Computer Engineering major. In addition, sophomore Delphine Rouvillois made the All-Academic Team for the first time while sophomore Chelby Cooke and senior Stephanie Skaras received honorable mentions for their academic achievements.
"I've always been so proud of our academic standing for the entire team at Santa Clara, " said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell. "This is a nice recognition by the conference of the great work they do in the classroom. Katie and Delphine with their especially phenomenal GPAs are our No. 1 and No. 2 players for singles and doubles. It is a great accomplishment."
Le, who is ranked No. 29 by the ITA, has been recognized for her excellence in the classroom since her sophomore year on the Mission campus. The Milpitas, Calif. native was also honored by the WCC for her singles performance this season. Le tallied a 28-5 overall record while going 17-2 in dual matches. She stands atop the all-time leader board with 103 career singles wins.
The senior will be traveling to the University of Georgia on May 21 to compete in her third consecutive NCAA Division 1 Women's Tennis Singles Championship—the only player in Santa Clara history to do so.
Rouvillois, with a WCC honorable mention in singles, garnered a 12-10 overall record and a 10-6 dual record. The sophomore boasts an impressive 3.88 GPA in the Leavey School of Bussiness. The Grenoble, France native plays at the No. 2 spot in singles and doubles for the Broncos and registered a six match winning streak in February. This is just the second WCC accolade for the sophomore after joining the team in January 2012.
Cooke, who was recently named a part of the No. 1 doubles All-Tournament Team in the WCC Championships, received an honorable mention for her high academic performance as a Business major. This is Skaras' second WCC honorable mention for the All-Academic Team as a Public Health Science major in addition to being named an ITA Scholar-Athlete during her junior year.
The women's tennis team posted the highest GPA at 3.452 for the Winter 2014 quarter.
The Broncos finished fourth in the WCC standings after reaching the semifinals of the Championships for the fifth straight year. Santa Clara ended the 2014 spring season with a 12-10 overall dual record. The team tallied 5-2 record at home, 3-6 on the road and 4-2 on neutral surfaces. The Broncos went 5-4 in the WCC regular season this spring with wins over San Francisco, Loyola Marymount, Portland and Gonzaga.
To be considered for the WCC All-Academic squad, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA, while also being a significant contributor to her team.
