Cross Country off to Productive Start at USF Invitational

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Santa Clara cross country began the 2015 season with a pair of top five team finishes Saturday at the USF Invitational in Hellman Hollow Meadow. The Bronco women's team placed fourth in the 5k race and the men's team placed fifth in the 8k race; each field featured 13 teams.

"I thought we accomplished what we set out to do," head coach Felipe Montoro said. "We were disciplined early and were able to execute the plan. On both sides, some freshmen really impressed and showed that they are ready to contribute right away."

Sophomore Grayson Murphy and redshirt senior Mary Kriege finished 0.1 seconds apart as Santa Clara's top two runners. Camille Dyer cracked the Top 25 with a time of 19:04.3, while newcomers Jamie Ferris and Bevin McCullough finished in the Top 30 overall and Top 5 Santa Clara runners.

Santa Clara's top five consisted of returners Berriatua, Crook, and Greenough along with freshmen Brumbaugh and Misuraca. Berriatua and Crook finished with identical times of 25:59.5. In total, 13 Broncos ran and six made their debuts. The top five had a spread of only 17 seconds.
