
CHANDLER, Ariz. – Junior Carlos Briones shot a final round 3-under 69 helping the Santa Clara men's golf team to an 11th-place finish at the 13th annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic, completed today on the 7,218-yard, par-72 Cattail Course at the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.
With a final round 2-under 286 the Broncos finished at 861 (-3) one shot behind Southern Utah for 10th place. McNeese State captured the team title at 838 (-26), two shots better than runner-up Idaho.
Briones shot the final 36 holes at 7-under 137 to tie for 17th at 3-under 212 for his 10th career top 20 finish. Weber State's Devon Purser took first, McNeese State's Robert MacIntyre second and Idaho's Jared du Toit third in a playoff after the three completed 54 holes in first place tie.
Freshman Hayden Shieh also finished under par at 214 (-2) to tie for 28th. He scored a final round 1-over 73 and dropped from a top 20 finish. Sophomore Tyler Kertson carded a final round 2-under 70 to jump 15 spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for 55th at 2-over 218.
Gio Gandionco was consistent with three rounds of 74 to tie for 71st at 222 (+6). Drew Miller finished at 7-over 223 (76-70-77) tied for 74th.
Competing as an individual Michael Hultquist opened the tournament with a career-best round of 72 and ended at 230 (+14).
The Broncos will now prep for the West Coast Conference championship which starts Monday at the Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif.
