SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's soccer was picked to win the West Coast Conference by a poll of the league's 10 head coaches, it was announced Thursday.
The Broncos got 76 points, one ahead of runner-up BYU. Both teams received five first place votes. Santa Clara finished in third place in last season's standings while BYU tied Pepperdine in the top spot.
In addition to being picked to win one of the best conferences in the country, senior Kellie Peay and sophomore Gudrun Arnardottir were both named to the All-WCC Preseason Team.
Peay is a two-time Second Team All-WCC selection and was also Second Team All-West Region as a sophomore in 2015.
Arnardottir was named the 2016 WCC Freshman of the Year and was Second Team All-WCC as well as being named Second Team All-West Region.
The two defenders helped anchor a back line that didn't allow more than two goals in any of its 23 games last year and surrendered just one in the run to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
Santa Clara hosts its Red and White Scrimmage tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Stevens Stadium.
