"We are thrilled to have Matt join our staff," head coach Mark O'Brien said upon Mueller's hiring in 2004. "He comes from a great coaching family and brings a wealth of expertise to our program. His ability to work with our catchers and hitters on a daily basis is going to be a wonderful addition to our program.

Mueller graduated from Siena College in Loudonville, New York in the spring of 2003 after transferring from De Anza College two years earlier. He helped lead his team to the 2002 MAAC Tournament, while ranking fourth in the league with 10 home runs. Over the course of his years at Siena, Mueller posted one of the top fielding percentages in the program's history, ranking among Siena's top 10.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for me," said Mueller. "I am excited to be back at home and at a great institution like Santa Clara University."

Following his playing time at Siena, Mueller became a coach at his alma mater during the 2004 season. He was the Saint's hitting coach, while also working with the catchers. Under his coaching, Siena improved its team batting average by 47 points from the previous season. He also tutored two current minor league players in Ryan Bitter (Tampa Bay) and Blake Henen (Baltimore).

This summer, Mueller was the head coach of the Saratoga Phillies in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. With players from around the country, including SCU's Shawn Epidendio and Bryan Fleming, Mueller led the Phillies to a third place finish in the league in their inaugural season.

A Bay Area native, Mueller graduated from Cupertino High School in 1998. While at Cupertino, Mueller was the team captain and MVP during his senior season. He also received All-SCUAL honors for his work behind the plate.

Mueller is engaged to Malia Baxter. He resides in San Jose
