A smile and a thank you goes a long way! In a surprise visit on Wednesday morning, eight Bronco student-athletes came to Santa Clara's monthly athletic department to do just that - thank the entire department for everything they did to help them throughout their careers on and off the fields and courts as they prepared to take final exams.
With the rare chance to face Bronco teammates in competitive matches this spring, three Santa Clara women's soccer players participated in the U-20 and U-23 National Camps in June. Juniors Meleana Shim and Morgan Marlborough played for the U-23 team and took on sophomore Julie Johnston and the U-20 team in two competitive matches. Both games ended in ties, 4-4 and 3-3, but all three Broncos enjoyed the experience of facing teammates.
Having already participated in the U20 U.S. Women's National Team camp this year, Santa Clara women's soccer freshman Sofia Huerta recently returned from playing with the U20 Mexican National Team for one week. While the camp lasted two weeks, Huerta was only able to attend for one week due to academic responsibilities. Huerta, who is half-Mexican, has held dual-citizenship her entire life and her father hails from Puebla, Mexico.
With spring season over and enjoying some much needed time away from the field, Santa Clara women's soccer announced its three Spring Forward Award winners May 11. The three winners were sophomores Cali Reis and Nikki Ambrose and freshman Katie Speidel.
Bronco rising sophomore, Katie Speidel (KS), had an amazing fall season on the field as a first- year Bronco student-athlete with the women’s soccer team. Her hard work and determination led only to an even more impressive spring season with Broncos.
Speidel has played soccer nearly her entire life, and is thrilled to be given the opportunity to continue her athletic career with the Broncos. Speidel sat down with SantaClaraBroncos.com (SCU) and discussed her position change from fall to spring season, and shared how she feels it was only a result of her improvement and growth as a player, physically and mentally. Whether it be from the wide-mid position or center forward, Speidel enjoys the attacking aspect of her offensive positions and will continue to increase her drive to goal.
Bronco women’s soccer player Alexis Rubattino (AR) spent her 2012 spring break far away from the familiarity of the Mission Campus, traveling to the Dominican Republic to help underprivileged and orphaned kids. The junior Bronco goalkeeper thoroughly enjoyed her first trip outside of her home country, forming many close bonds with the locals while gaining a deeper understanding of her life goals. Posting a perfect 5-0 record, Santa Clara women's soccer outscored its opponents 20-4 this spring on the way to its second consecutive undefeated spring season. The Broncos will take a break from the soccer field before pre-season practice begins again in August.
Looking to complete its second consecutive undefeated spring season, Santa Clara women's soccer will take on Stanford Fri., April 27 at 7 p.m. and Fresno State on Sun., April 29 at 4 p.m. Both games will take place at Buck Shaw Stadium.

After taking down 2011 NCAA Tournament opponent Cal 4-2 last match to open spring play, Santa Clara's women's soccer team will play its second spring game vs. the Sacramento Storm, a semi-professional team of the Women's Soccer Premier League, on Sat., April 14 at 3 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium. All spring games are free and open to the public.
U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV is pleased to announce that Coach Jerry Smith, Coach of the women’s soccer program at Santa Clara University, has accepted the position of Head Coach for the Region IV Girls ODP Program.
Julie Johnston of Santa Clara women's soccer continued her impressive play in the CONCACAF U20 Women’s Championship. The U.S. topped Mexico by a score of 4-0, the first goal being scored by Johnston. The win advances to U.S. to the championship game and clinches a spot in the World Cup in Japan from Aug. 19 to Sept. 8.
Santa Clara women's soccer All-American Julie Johnston is currently participating int he U20 World Cup Qualifying in Panama City, Panama. A 6-0 win over the host city Panama propelled the American team to a win in Group B. Johnston scored a goal in the 53rd minute to help the U.S.'s offensive charge.
While most students are still shaking off the rust of a three week winter break, Santa Clara University women's soccer was well represented at the U20 Women's Soccer National Team Camp in January. First-Team All-American and First-Team All-WCC sophomore Julie Johnston and First-Team All-WCC freshman Sofia Huerta worked with some of the best young talent in the country. Johnston and Huerta were first and second on the Bronco roster in goals scored in 2011 with nine and eight, respectively. Johnston, a member of the active roster, went to La Manga, Spain a month later to compete with the team in U20 World Cup qualifying.
Adding to a Bronco team roster that was ranked as high as No. 7 in the country in 2011, Santa Clara head women's soccer coach Jerry Smith announced the signing of five players for the class of 2016 Thursday. The class consists of four attacking players and a goalkeeper.
Morgan Marlborough (MM), one of the top goal-scorers in the country, knew what she wanted when she decided to transfer for her senior season: to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time and have a chance to win the national championship. She chose to come to Santa Clara University to try and accomplish her goals and help the program return to the top of the women's college soccer world in her last collegiate season. seminar is for women coaches, including aspiring coaches, at any
level and will be held Mon., Feb. 20.
Santa Clara women's soccer has landed one of the top goal-scorers in the nation with the transfer of senior-to-be Morgan Marlborough from the University of Nebraska. Marlborough is the back-to-back Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and All-American. She will have to sit out the 2012 season due to the NCAA's transfer rules.
Santa Clara All-American goalkeeper Bianca Henninger was taken with the first pick in the third round, 13th overall, by the Philadelphia Independence in the 2012 Women's Professional Soccer Draft on Friday. Henninger joins a long list of Broncos to be selected in the WPS Draft including Jordan Angelis (second round), Kiki Bosio (third round), Amanda Poach (third round) Katherine Reynolds (fourth round) and Meagan Snell (fifth round) in 2010.
Nationally ranked Santa Clara women's soccer has announced the dates for its SCU Girls Winter Soccer Academy as well as the dates for its Summer Day Camp.
Coming off a 13-win season and the 23rd trip to the NCAA Tournament in the program's history , the Santa Clara University women's soccer team was honored with two All-America selections. Sophomore midfielder Julie Johnston was the lone Bronco to be named a First Team All-American and goalkeeper Bianca Henninger was named to the Third Team.
In a season in which it went to the 23rd NCAA Tournament in school history, the Santa Clara University women's soccer team (13-2-6; 6-1-1 WCC) reestablished the lofty standards set by a program that has made 10 College Cup appearances and took home a national championship in 2001. The Broncos reached as high as No. 7 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll after topping undefeated and then-No. 3 Pepperdine on Oct. 28. The Broncos won 13 games for the third consecutive season but cut their losses from seven in 2009 and 2010 to two in 2011.
Following up her West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year award in 2010, Santa Clara women's soccer's Julie Johnston has been named a semi-finalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy for her play in 2011.

Earning its 22nd NCAA Tournament bid on Monday, the seventh-ranked Santa Clara University women's soccer team will play Cal in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sat., Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. The game will be at Buck Shaw Stadium where the Broncos went 7-1-2 during the regular season. Its only loss at home was 2-0 to No. 1 Stanford.
