SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Coming off a 13-win season and the 23rd trip to the NCAA Tournament in the program's history , the Santa Clara University women's soccer team was honored with two All-America selections. Sophomore midfielder Julie Johnston was the lone Bronco to be named a First Team All-American and goalkeeper Bianca Henninger was named to the Third Team.
"I am so thrilled for Bianca and Julie," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "To be recognized by opposing coaches all the way up to the All-American level is amazing. Both Bianca and Julie are very deserving of this recognition. I see on a daily basis the work they've put into their development. The commitment and sacrifices they've made have paid off for them and they've absolutely earned the right to be called All-Americans!"
"I am extremely honored and humbled to be named as an All-American," said Johnston. "Honestly, I have been blessed with great teammates and a great program. I couldn't be more excited and grateful to be honored."
"It's always an honor to receive something like this, mainly because of the caliber of players that you're grouped with, like Julie," said Henninger. "We are surrounded by amazing people at this program that make us better players and people everyday and I hope these awards for Julie and I make that clear for everyone to see."
Henninger, a preseason All-WCC selection, had another stellar season in net for the Broncos. Making 18 starts she allowed only 13 goals, good for a 0.72 GAA which was second in the WCC. She also made 60 saves and recorded four shutouts despite battling injuries all season.
Johnston, the 2010 WCC Freshman of the Year, showed she would not endure a sophomore slump by leading the Broncos with nine goals and 22 points. She also led the conference with four game-winning goals. Her play during the week of Sept. 19 nabbed her WCC Player of the Week honors. That week Johnston scored the only goal in a 1-0 Santa Clara win over Washington State and against No. 17 Cal she added two more goals to help the Broncos to a 3-0 win.
