Santa Clara Competes at Stanford Invite, Distance Carnival

March 28, 2009

San Francisco, Calif. - The Bronco track and field teams competed in San Francisco at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival and in Palo Alto at the Stanford Invitational, again breaking two records and collecting a number of personal bests.

Next weekend Santa Clara will compete in the Johnny Mathis Invitational in San Francisco.

At the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, Whitney Porter ran an excellent 10000m race in her first effort, breaking the school record at 37:14.77 when she finished in fourth place. Porter and teammate Noelle Lopez set a perfect even pace in the first 5k (18:39). Porter felt stronger and started to move up on the field during the last two miles. Lopez also ran a sub 38:00 in her first 10k effort.

The women's 4X400m relay finished in first place at 4:13.28, running without top sprinter Kazimir Brown who was running at Stanford. The relay included Jennifer Hinds, Jenny Light, Joanna Gistand and Jackie Lynch.

At the Stanford Invitational, Brown just missed making the final in the 100m, crossing the line at 12.4, a new Santa Clara school record.

Melissa Conlin continues to fight back on the track, after missing a year of running due to injury and finished the two mile race 11:47.16 at the Distance Carnival.

Also at the Distance Carnival, in an excellent 1500m race, John Laughlin broke the four-minute barrier with a flourishing last 300 meters. And Garrett Smith also showed promise in coming back this season after a long layoff to record a mini-PR with a 4:07.54 in the 1500m.

Nguyen Le ran the 3000m Steeplechase and improved all aspects of this challenging race including his time, hitting a personal best 9:52.93.
