Men's Basketball Releases 2010-11 Schedule
Schedule Features Las Vegas Invite, 44th annual Cable Car Classic
Santa Clara, Calif. – Opening the 2011 WCC schedule vs. San Francisco on Sat., Jan. 8, Santa Clara released its 2010-11 men's basketball schedule today (see page 2 for 2010-11 schedule). The upcoming scheduled features 11 games vs. 2010 post-season teams during the upcoming season, including 18 home games. The Broncos, who were the seventh-youngest team in the country last year, will have one of the youngest teams in the country again this season with nine freshmen and sophomore scholarship players.
Santa Clara will play three WCC games on ESPNU. Times for WCC games will be released in mid-September as the WCC will once again join forces with the Comcast Network to televise a number of WCC games (complete Comcast schedule to be released in mid-September). All Bronco men's basketball games will be broadcast live on KDOW 1220 AM with Anthony Passarelli making the call for the fourth straight season.
"We are excited to be able to provide 18 home games again for our students, alumni, season ticket holders and fans," said Bronco head coach Kerry Keating, who is entering his fourth season at the helm. "The season will be a challenging and competitive one with the league slate maybe its toughest from top to bottom in recent memory. I look forward to seeing everyone in Leavey Center - our players are excited to be able to share a majority of their season in Leavey - the season promises to be an exciting one!"
Santa Clara will host the 44th annual Cable Car Classic - the longest running annual university tournament in the country on Wed., Dec. 29 and Thurs., Dec. 30. This year's tournament will feature the Broncos, Delaware, American and Fordham. Last year's finalists, Wofford (NCAA) and Northeastern (NIT) both advanced to the post-season, making it the 31st time in 43 years a team from the Cable Car Classic has advanced to the NCAA Tournament later in the season.
Santa Clara will also play in the 10th Annual Las Vegas Invitational over Thanksgiving weekend. The field, in addition to Santa Clara, includes 2008 NCAA champion Kansas, Arizona, Ohio, Northern Colorado, Bethune-Cookman, Vaparaiso and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Las Vegas Invitational is an exempt tournament which enables Santa Clara, per NCAA rules, to schedule two additional games for a total of 30.
The first two rounds of the Las Vegas Invitational will be played at home sites with Santa Clara hosting both rounds. Santa Clara will host Bethune-Cookman on Sun., Nov. 21 and Northern Colorado on Tues., Nov. 23. Heading to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas for the final two rounds, Santa Clara will play Arizona on Fri., Nov. 26 and Kansas will take on Ohio in third round action. On Sat., Nov. 27, match-ups include Santa Clara vs. 2010 NCAA Tournament team Ohio and Kansas taking on Arizona.
