Basketball's Roquemore and Payne Honored with Mid-Major All-American Awards

 Santa Clara, Calif. – Bronco basketball players Evan Roquemore and Troy Payne were both honored by the CollegeInsider.com website this week. Roquemore was named to the Mid-Major Freshman All-American team and Payne was named to the Mid-Major Defensive All-American team.  Earlier this month Kevin Foster was named a Mid-Major All-American and the MVP of the West Coast Conference.  Foster was named a Mid-Major Freshman All-American his rookie year as well in 2009.

"Congratulations to Evan and Troy for their well-deserved and hard-earned honors. Both worked consistently hard throughout the season, and played their best basketball in the latter half," said Bronco head coach Kerry Keating. We're proud of both, wish Troy well as a graduating senior and look for Evan to continue to improve as he moves into his sophomore year."

Roquemore, named to the All-WCC Freshman team, averaged 11.7 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 3.7 apg and 0.9 spg in 31.4 mpg.  He scored double-figures in 24 games, including 10 of last 12 games.  He broke the Bronco freshman school record for minutes played, assists, free throws made and attempted; and No. 2 in freshman records with free throw % and points scored.  He finished the season No. 2 all-time in minutes played in a season.

"Evan came to our program late last summer, made an immediate impact and stayed consistent throughout, accepting a larger role as the season got longer, which is a testament to him, as that is not easy for a freshman to do," said Keating.

Payne was named to the WCC Defensive Player of the Year and also to the CollegeInsider.com Post-Season All-Tournament team.  He averaged 5.4 ppg, 1.6 spg, 1.1 apg and 5.9 rpg in 24.5 mpg.  He started 27 games, playing in all 38.  He had a career-high six steals in three WCC contests on the road and scored a career-high 18 points vs. Northern Arizona, hitting 12 of 13 free throws. 

"Troy set a pre-season goal to become a better defender and to see him achieve that after having a good defensive season as a junior is very rewarding," said Keating. 

Payne will graduate in June with a degree in Communication and Roquemore returns to the hardwoods on Mon., April 24 when Santa Clara's individuals begin.
