Strong Second Round Puts Broncos In 5th at Anteater Invitational

The Santa Clara men's golf team completed the first day of the 33rd Anteater Invitational in fifth place after a 36-hole total of 606. The Broncos were one of three teams to finish the second round of play with a score under 300 when they totaled a 297, just one stroke behind Cal State Fullerton, who led the round with a 296. CS Fullerton is tied with Long Beach State for the tournament lead with a two-round total of 593. Eleven schools are competing in the event at the El Niguel Country Club in Laguna Niguel, Calif.

Freshman Martin Keskari carded a 1-under 71 over the first 18 holes and came in with a 3-over 75 in the next round to pace the Broncos with a two-round total of 2-over 146 and a 5th place tie after 36 holes. Keskari birdied the final three holes in round 1 and finished the back 9 with a 2-under 34. He carded an eagle-3 on the 16th hole in round two.

Long Beach State's Daniel Chian is the only player under par leading the pack with a 1-under 143.

Freshmen Carlos Briones and Gio Gandionco each tallied a 1-over 73 in the second round with Gandionco carding 15 pars over the 18 holes. Briones, competing for the first time since the Arizona Intercollegiate in late January, recovered from an opening round total of 79.

Junior Scott Lowe is just two strokes behind Gandionco after a two-round total of 11-over 155. After a first round 79, Lowe clipped three strokes off his score for a second-round 76.

The tournament concludes Tuesday with one 18-hole round that begins at 8:00 a.m. (PDT).
