MORAGA, Calif. - The Bronco men's tennis team played 14 singles and six doubles matches at the Saint Mary's Gael Classic, Moraga, Calif. on Sat., Nov. 6. The Broncos collected 11 victories and four SCU players were on the way to the finals in singles before the rains started Sunday and washed away the tournament.
The Gael Classic began with surprising results for the Broncos; all seeded players were eliminated. In singles, No. 2 seed Kyle Dandan lost to No.5 seed Matt Kandath from Stanford (6-4, 2-6, 1-0(4)) in the quarterfinals after winning vs. Nevada. The Broncos No. 5 seed John Lamble lost against a player from California (6-3, 4-6, 1-0(3)) in the Round of 16. They both struggled with the Gael Classic's sudden death rule, which is when the two players tied in the first two sets, whoever wins the first game in the third set wins. In doubles, No.1 seed doubles team of Dandan and Nico Vinel defeated Sacramento (9-8(14)) but were topped by Stanford in the semifinals (8-6).
Other players in Flight B and Flight C singles successfully proceeded to the title round until the Gael Classic was cancelled. Bronco singles players, Tom Pham and Maxime Armengaud, advanced in Flight B and Vinel and Keith Kamono advanced in Flight C. Both had two victories each to proceed the semifinals of each flight. Eugene Muchynski also proceeded to the semifinals in Flight B Consolation after a great comeback against a player from Nevada (1-6, 7-6(6), 1-0(8)).
Bronco doubles teams Lamble and Armengaud and Muchynski and Kamono were headed to playing against each other in the finals of Flight B Consolation doubles tournament.
