Michael Floyd is in his seventh season as associate head coach for Santa Clara women's basketball in 2022-23.

Floyd spent two seasons as an assistant on the women’s basketball staff at Alabama State before joining the Broncos. In his two years with the Hornets the team compiled a record of 46-27 and won back-to-back SWAC championships to advance to the NCAA tournament.

Prior to his arrival to ASU, Floyd spent a short stint as an assistant men’s coach at Bishop State Community College in Mobile, Alabama.

During the 2013-14 season he was announced as the interim head coach of the University of West Alabama men’s team, before taking over as an assistant and helping drive them to the most wins since the 1997-98 season. In the same season he assisted the team to its first win over a Division I opponent since 1980, a second place finish in the Gulf South Conference and finished ranked fifth in the NCAA South II Region. West Alabama also participated in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 32 years.

He began his coaching career as an assistant at Spring Hill College, where he served as the recruiting coordinator, film exchange coordinator, scouting coordinator and camp director. He prepared schedules and travel arrangements, while designing and coaching offensive and defensive sets.

After spending two years at Spring Hill College, Floyd went back to school to pursue a master’s degree in Health Services at the University of Alabama. While at Alabama, he gained additional experience spending two years as a graduate assistant, assisting with all aspects of men’s Division I basketball; to include obtaining and breaking down game film and assisting with the University of Alabama basketball camps. In his first year at Alabama, the Crimson Tide were ranked for the first time in the school’s history compiling a 20-11 record. In 2003-04 Alabama made it to the Elite Eight (21-13).

Floyd returned to full-time status as an assistant at Troy from 2004-05. He was responsible for film exchange and on and off-campus recruiting activities as well as being the academic supervisor. Floyd made three more stops from 2005-2013. He had a year stint at Alabama Southern Community College (2005-06) as the head men’s coach. He guided Alabama Southern to an 18-12 record and a second-place finish in the division in 2005-06. Followed by a season at Texas A&M-Corus Christi (2006-07), where the Islanders went 26-7 and 14-2 in its first year in the Southland Conference.

He spent five seasons at the University of South Alabama (2007-13) with similar responsibilities at each school. While in the Sun Belt Conference, he helped coached the player of the year Augustine Rubit and in his first year at USA, he helped the Jags earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament after compiling a 26-7 overall record.

Floyd earned his bachelor’s degree from Murray State in Sociology in 2000. During his playing days as a three-year member of the Murray State men’s basketball team, he was chosen team captain while also winning two Ohio Valley Conference Championships. He helped lead the Racers to 56 victories in his last two years there. He was a two-year letter-winner at the University of South Alabama from 1994-1996 averaging 7.7 points as a freshman.

Floyd was an All-State player at McGill-Toolen High School in Mobile, Ala. He averaged 21 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals as a junior to help lead the team to Class 6A state tournament.

He is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and Monroeville, Ala., Chamber of Commerce representative. He is married to Poppy and they have five kids (three girls and two boys): Peyton, Micah, Matalie, Preston and Landon.
