Women's Basketball Tops San Jose State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sophomore Kendra Rhea led the Santa Clara women's basketball team in an 85-68 defeat of San Jose State this evening at the San Jose Event Center.

Santa Clara improves to 3-1 with the victory, while San Jose State falls to 2-2 on the season. Although the Broncos trial the Spartans 18 to 20 in the all-time series, Santa Clara has now won the last 10 meetings.

Dubbed `Clash of the County," Rhea posted 19 points to lead a quartet of Broncos in double figures. Junior Caroline Gruening added 14, while senior Annie Garrison posted 12 and senior Jennifer Glysson added 10, all in the first half.

The Spartans were led by Atari Parki's 29 points, 21 of which came in the second half. Danada Smith added 18 for San Jose State. They were the only two scorers for the Spartans after intermission until the 2-minute mark.

Sophomore Julie Butler made her debut in a Bronco uniform this season, entering the game with 2 minutes left in the first half, and immediately layed up the ball for two. Rhea's layup at the buzzer gave Santa Clara a nine-point lead after 20 minutes of play.

Santa Clara continues its six-game road trip, traveling to 12th-ranked Oregon on Saturday, Dec. 2. The game will begin at 6 p.m. as part of a double-header with the Oregon men at Portland's Rose Garden.
