Broncos Rally For Doubleheader Split On Senior Day

Santa Clara, Calif. – The Santa Clara Broncos softball team rallied from a 4-1 deficit in game two and defeated San Diego 5-4 for a split of their Sunday doubleheader. San Diego took game one 6-0.

The Broncos pushed across two runs in the sixth inning on the strength of four hits. A leadoff double by Casandra Padilla and singles by Jordan Newell and Rochelle Rivera loaded the bases. With one out Jamie Wallis dropped a single into center to plate the tying run and Breezy Bernard followed with a sac fly to score the go ahead run.

Wallis led off the Santa Clara first with her first homerun of the season to tie the game at 1-1. San Diego took the lead in the top of the frame on an RBI double from Mary Grabowski.

The Toreros scored three times in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Grabowski doubled in a pair to chase Santa Clara starter Briana Rios, who allowed four runs on six hits with two walks in two-plus innings.

Wallis reached base in all four plate appearances with two hits, a walk and a hit by pitch, while Newell reached safely in her three at bats with two singles and a walk.

Stephanie Fisher singled in a run in the third to make it 4-2 and Rivera tripled past centerfielder Dana Prelsnik to plate Newell, who walked with one out, to close the gap to 4-3 in the fourth.

Ciara Gonzales, who tossed a 3-hit shutout on Saturday, pitched five scoreless innings in relief of Rios to collect the win and move her record to 3-12. She allowed four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

A one-out fourth inning double by Fisher was the only Bronco hit in game one, a 6-0 San Diego win behind Cassady Coleman, who walked two and struckout eight to improve her record to 13-13.

The Broncos are now 8-45 overall and 5-19 in PCSC play. They conclude their season on Tuesday with a 6:00 p.m. contest at Stanford. San Diego ends its season at 24-29 and 9-15 in PCSC action.

GAME NOTES: Santa Clara seniors Carissa Theis, Vanessa Renae Leija and Jamie Wallis were honored in a pre-game ceremony. Theis started game one and took the loss (3-16) going 4.1 innings with six strikeouts. Wallis, Newell and Rivera each had two hits in game two.
