Hannah Owings begins her first season as an assistant coach. She shares responsibilities related to all aspects of the program. "Hannah has great energy for coaching and for the game itself," head coach Jaime Forman-Lau said. "She is mature, creative and confident in her approach to all aspects of coaching, on and off the field. Hannah's familiarity with the standards of Division I softball and her ability to work closely with infielders and hitters will be an asset to this program in its quest for a second conference championship and first NCAA tournament berth." Owings graduated from the University of Virginia in May with a bachelor's degree in psychology. A two-time Academic All-American, she was also an All-Atlantic Coast Conference player at first base, and a team captain her senior season. Owings started all 63 games last year, batting .357, with nine home runs and 34 RBIs, third on the team. In addition, she led the Cavaliers in fielding percentage the last two seasons and holds a program record for career putouts, with 1,420. Last spring, she was named the team's most valuable player, while also receiving the ACC Top VI Award, given to a student-athlete who provides an outstanding level of community service. "I am very excited about being a part of such a young and energetic program," Owings said. "I was introduced to Santa Clara last year and it is such a beautiful area. I'm looking forward to transitioning from a player to a coach and learning together with Jaime. It's a great opportunity and stepping stone to start my coaching career."
