SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Freshman Christen Gumbs recorded a first for the newly-established Santa Clara outdoor track team as he won the 3,000-meters at the Johnny Mathis Invitational in San Francisco on Saturday. Gumbs crossed the line in a time of 9:20 on his 19th birthday for the first individual race victory by a Bronco this season.
Also highlighting the men's racing on Saturday, Michael Delaurenti and Chris Doerhoff placed 10th and 11th, respectively in the 5,000-meters. Delaurenti posted a time of 15:09, while Doerhoff was close behind in a time of 15:12.
Chris Furnari also had a strong showing in the 800-meter race, leading a group of four Broncos in the event. He ran a time of 2:00.85 to place 11th. Daniel Bettencourt and John Hinman also posted top-20 performances in the race. Bettencourt was 16th in a time of 2:02.40, while Hinman crossed the line in 17th at 2:04.11. Brady Pivirotto placed 30th with a 2:07.31.
On the women's side, Katie Hansen was solid as she made her first appearance on the oval this year. Hansen placed second in the 3,000-meters in a time of 10:58.71. Lauren Swigart and Robin Bell also made their 2005 track debut in the event, finishing 5th and 6th, respectively. Freshman Adriane Puetz also recorded a top-10 finish in 7th place in a time of 11:28.22.
Shannon Bell continued to anchor the women's squad, placing third in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 17:51.14. Freshman Ann Thomas placed 10th in the event in a time of 18:34.30.
The Bronco men and women will both travel to Cal State Stanislaus for the Warrior Invitational next Saturday.
