SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University Department of Athletics officials announced today that the random selection lottery to allocate final general public allotment of tickets has been completed this week and the 2002 NCAA Men's Basketball West Regional has officially been declared a sellout.
The event, scheduled for March 21-23 at The Compaq Center at San Jose, will feature four teams that will play for the right to advance to the 2002 NCAA Final Four at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga. Seating capacity for the regional event at The Compaq Center at San Jose will be 17,757, which includes tickets issued through the use of the building's private suites.
Over 3,000 applications for a limited number of general public tickets were received by the ticket offices at Santa Clara University and The Compaq Center at San Jose during the five-week general public application process. Applications were made available in March and a random selection lottery was conducted recently to determine the recipients.
"When we announced that applications were available it was obvious that the demand was going to exceed the number of tickets that we could make available to the general public," said Santa Clara University Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick. "There is tremendous interest in college basketball and this sellout reflects our community's support for events such as this. We are excited to be hosting one of college athletics' premier events."
All refunds for those who were unsuccessful in the lottery have been processed and notification of the status of each general public application will be mailed within a week.
Pairings for the 2002 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament will be announced on Sunday, March 10 on CBS. Following the conclusion of the first two rounds of the tournament, tipoff times for the West Regional will be announced on Monday, March 18.
The 2002 West Regional is hosted by Santa Clara University in cooperation with the Compaq Center at San Jose and the San Jose Sports Authority.
