Final Stats

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Junior transfer Doron Perkins scored a career-high 18 points and Ethan Rhode added a season-high 15 as Santa Clara defeated Holy Names College 90-62 Monday night in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Leavey Center.

Brandon Rohe had 12 points as the Broncos (3-2) won their third straight. Travis Niesen was the only other player in double-figures for the Broncos with 10 points and Jim Howell grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Santa Clara travels to South Bay rival San Jose State Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the Spartans' Event Center. The game is part of the Rivalry Series between the two schools.

Geral Lowe scored 13 points for Holy Names (1-8), which was playing its only contest against a NCAA Division I school this season. Migues Vargas added 12 points as the Hawks were forced into 22 turnovers and shot just 21 percent from beyond the three-point line.

After a sluggish first half, the Broncos opened the second half with a 9-0 run to take a 45-34 edge, and were able to maintain their advantage the rest of the way, eventually building a 21-point lead with 6:25 left. Santa Clara shot over 54 percent in the second half, while the Hawks hovered around 20 percent.

Santa Clara took a 35-34 lead at halftime when Perkins hit one of two free throws with 30 seconds left.

The Hawks were able to stay close to the Broncos through the first half thanks to their hot shooting. Holy Names shot 50 percent from the field for most of the half while Santa Clara struggled at just under 40 percent. The Broncos never led by more than eight before the half.

The Broncos shot a season-best 50 percent from the three-point line for the game, making nine of 18 attempts. In addition, 25 of Santa Clara's 31 baskets in the game were assisted which marked the first time a Bronco squad had 25 assists or more in a game since the 31 they rung-up against Southern in December, 1995.
