March 4, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University men's basketball players Brody Angley and John Bryant were named All-West Coast Conference First Team selections after posting career seasons for the Broncos. Angley was named All-WCC Honorable Mention last season, while Bryant earns his first All-WCC honor.

Angley, a senior captain, has had a tremendous final season on the Mission Campus for the Broncos. The point guard from Redding, Calif. averaged a career high in points (11.6 per game), rebounds (4.2 per game) and assists (5.3 per game) during the regular season. He placed second in the WCC in assists and was one of the top rebounding guards in the conference. He notched over 10 assists in a game four times this season and scored over 20 points four times as well.

He ranks in the Top 10 all-time in program history in seven different statistical categories. Angley is currently third in assists (497), second in game started (109), tied for fourth in games played (120), third in minutes played (3,598), fifth in steals (167), eighth in three-pointers made (122) and eighth in three-pointers attempted (346). Feb. 2 against Portland, he became the 26th player in school history to reach 1,000 points and he currently has 1,053, good for 23rd all-time. His 155 assists this season tie him for the fourth-highest single-season total in school history. He also became the eighth player in program history to play over 1,000 minutes in a season with 1,018.

Bryant has put together one of the most impressive seasons ever for a Bronco big man. The 6-10 junior from San Pablo, Calif. averaged 18.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game in the regular season, ranking him second in the conference in scoring, first in rebounds and first in blocks. He also led the conference in double doubles with 14 on the season and field goal percentage (.589), while displaying tremendous consistency game-to-game. He scored in double figures in 27 out of 29 games and had over 10 rebounds 14 times.

John Bryant has been dominant for SCU this season.

His 68 blocks this season broke the school's all-time single-season block record of 67, set by Nick Vanos in 1983-84. Bryant now has 154 career blocks, placing him five behind Vanos for the all-time career record. On Feb. 23, he joined Angley in the 1,000-point club, becoming the 27th player in school history to score 1,000. With 1,034 points, Bryant is 24th all-time in scoring in school history. His 275 rebounds this season are tied for the ninth-highest total in a single season in school history, and he is now tied for 10th in career rebounds with 662. From Feb. 11-18, Bryant had one of the best stretches of basketball in school history. He made 19 straight field goal attempts over three games against Saint Mary's, Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount. He made his final six shots against the Gaels, went 11-for-11 against Pepperdine, before hitting his first two shots against Loyola Marymount. He notched a double-double in all-three games, capped by a 36-point, 15 rebound, three-block night against LMU on Feb. 18, shooting 15-of-20 from the floor.

The Broncos travel to San Diego this weekend to play in the WCC Championships. A four-seed, the Broncos earned a first-round bye and play the winner of San Francisco-Loyola Marymount on Saturday, Mar. 8 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion at 6 p.m. PT.
