SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The seventh-ranked Santa Clara University men's soccer team remained unbeaten in 2003 with a 2-0 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on day one of the Santa Clara adidas Classic. The win moves the Broncos' record to 5-0-2 while dropping the Otters to 3-4-0.
Sophomore Eric Irvine used his head to tally both goals for the Broncos, one in each half. The first goal came at the 39 minute mark when fellow sophomore Ryan Wolfe sent a long cross across to the left side of the six-yard box where Irvine calmly headed the ball past CSUMB netminder Jared Racz into the lower right side of the net.
Goal two came at the 68:19 mark when freshman Tannen Wels sent another ball from right to left across the box where Irvine headed home the pass from 12-yards out. The two goals for Irvine give him the first multiple goal game of the season for SCU.
Santa Clara's defense was stellar as usual as its scoreless streak was run up to 357:46 following their sixth shutout of the season. Steve Cronin played the first 83 minutes before being pulled in favor of Kent Harkness. The team's goals-against average fell to 0.13 with the shutout.
The Broncos' game was the second of the evening as San Francisco and George Washington opened up play in the Santa Clara adidas Classic earlier in the night. The Dons from USF came out on top with a 3-1 victory behind goals from Jonathan Povey, Ben Stuart and Nick Kounalakas.
Anar Johannsson tallied the lone goal for the Colonials on a penalty kick with three seconds remaining in the match. The win moves the Dons' record to 3-4-0 while George Washington's falls to 1-5-0.
Day two of the Santa Clara adidas Classic will commence at 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 20th, when San Francisco and Cal State Monterey battle in the early match. Santa Clara will take on GW in the final match of the classic at 7:30 p.m. that evening.
