Santa Clara Draws Even With LMU 1-1

Oct. 16, 2009

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Known for fielding a strong defensive side, the Santa Clara University men's soccer team turned in another outstanding effort defensively, limiting one of the league's best offensive teams to just three shots on goal and five corners en route to playing LMU to a 1-1 draw Friday in Los Angeles.

Santa Clara (3-6-3; 1-2-1 WCC) has played 12 matches - eight have been decided by one goal or less. It was the fourth double-overtime game for the Broncos in 2009. SCU has allowed just four goals in its last five matches.

"This was one of the best defensive games we've played this year and one of our best games overall," said Santa Clara Head Coach and former U.S. Olympic Team captain Cameron Rast. "We really played well in the second half and we had a chance with just seconds left and their goalkeeper made a great save."

Seven minutes into the match an LMU defender attempted a clear, but instead drilled a ball of SCU forward Ross Smith which ricocheted backwards and into the net, staking the Broncos to an early lead.

The Lions generated an equalizer moments after the intermission when Jonas Reiter headed-in a free kick by Logan McDaniel.

"The result wasn't unfair to either team," added Rast. "It was a good game. If we are playing solid defense we are not going to concede much at all. I was pleased that (LMU) was not able to get much going. I think it will build our confidence."

LMU (6-5-1; 1-2-1 WCC) had beat two Top 10 opponents during its non-conference schedule and opened league play with an overtime win over USF 3-2 on October 2. However, the Lions are now winless in its last three WCC matches.

The match saw 35 fouls called between the two teams. LMU was cited for all of the game's five cards.

The Broncos square off with league-leading USD Sunday at Torero Stadium in San Diego. Kick off is scheduled for 2 p.m. San Diego will be streaming live video Sunday on (www.USDToreros.com).
