FRESNO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's tennis team advanced one doubles tandem to the semifinals of the Wathen/Hancock Bulldog Classic, hosted by Fresno State University at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The Broncos added to their opening fall tournament of the season by advancing two singles players to the quarterfinal round of the consolation bracket.
Sophomore Francisco Zepponi won the consolation singles title last year at this event and is on the path for a repeat performance. He will take on fifth seed Jason Pongsrikul of San Diego tomorrow morning in quarterfinal action. Junior Erich Chen will compete against USF's Axel Elvik in another quarterfinal match up. The teammates are in different brackets and would not meet until the finals.
In doubles, Chen and partner Michael Bruggemann will face the top seed of Pongsrikul and Robbie Blair in the semifinals, after defeating Nicolas Beuque and Pierreck Ysern of San Diego 8-3 in the quarterfinals.
"They played solid," head coach George Husack said of the doubles team. "They had great returns and solid first serves. Francisco had it going from the beginning and was impressive stepping into the court."
