Bringing top-level experience, the Bronco men’s tennis program hired Jose Hilla as an assistant coach in September 2011. Hilla has worked on the junior and professional level. He also is a former national champion at the collegiate level.

“Jose is a great addition,” said head coach Derek Mills. “He is very energetic and the guys already feel his passion for the game. We’re excited to have him.”

Originally from Oviedo, Spain, Hilla spent one season at Fresno City College where he garnered All-American honors in both singles and doubles.

Hilla then transferred to Fresno Pacific University (NAIA) where he was part of tennis program that won three consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) titles from 2009 through 2011. During his time as a Sunbird, Hilla won two national titles (2009,’11) and was the runner-up in 2010. In his 2010 campaign, he finished the year in the nation’s top-10 in singles and doubles. He also served as the team captain.

“I’m excited to be coaching at the collegiate level,” said Hilla. “I’m excited to be apart of this university and to work with coach Mills.”

In 2009, he took a semester off to coach at the Roddick’s Lavelle Tennis Academy in San Antonio, Texas. He also has coaching experience with junior level and professional tennis players.

Each summer Hilla travels to New York to coach at East Hampton Indoor Tennis in Hamptons, N.Y.
