STANFORD, Calif. - In a back-and-forth match, where possession turned over quickly and consistently, the No. 11 Santa Clara women's soccer team fell, 1-0, to UNC Greensboro at the Stanford Invitational at Stanford University.

Lindsey Wicher, who made her collegiate debut midway through the first half at left back, and the Broncos defense, lead by goal keeper Bianca Henninger, kept Greensboro at bay much of the game. Santa Clara's freshman keeper, who started her second straight game, kept Greensboro out of goal until the 43rd minute when Nicole Danford scored the first and only goal of the game to get the Spartans out to a late 1-0 lead in the first half.

"We are disappointed with how we played and the outcome of the game," head coach Jerry Smith said. "We didn't we want to lose the game, but there were some bright spots. Unfortunately the goal that went in was a mix up between Bianca and one of our central defenders."

Santa Clara saw their best chance of evening out the score in the 80th minute when the Spartans foul lead to a Bronco free kick. Defender Lindsey Johnson, who took the shot from just outside the box, slammed a ball at the center of the goal, but it went just above the crossbar.

SCU will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 14 when they take on No. 5 North Carolina to conclude the Stanford Invitational. The Tar Heels are taking on host No. 3 Stanford in the second game of Friday's doubleheader.
