PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team (0-6) is still looking for their first win after another tough loss Friday as they opened the Stanford Invitational with a 3-0 loss to Pacific. Freshman Lauren Passafuime went the distance for the Broncos in her second start of the season, but a lack of run support was the difference in the game.
Pacific came out strong in the bottom of the first inning and took advantage of a leadoff walk and then a sacrifice and an error to put two runners in scoring position. A double by Lauren Weyman put Pacific up by two.
In the top of the third, the Broncos had their best chances of the game, after Ashley Blier walked to load the bases following Meghan Chavez reaching on an error and Angela Kabanuck doubling down the left field line. But with two outs already, slugger Jennifer Clarke flied out to centerfield to end the inning.
In the bottom of the third, another walk, sacrifice and error were all Pacific needed to get their third run, and both teams traded outs the rest of the way with no real scoring opportunities for either team as Lauren Passafuime kept the Broncos in the game.
The Broncos will next face Stanford at 2:00 p.m. in the second game of the Stanford Invitational.
