Softball Drops Season Finale at No. 13 Stanford

Stanford, Calif. – The Santa Clara softball team had nine hits and jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold on and fell at No. 13 Stanford, 11-3, in six innings on Tuesday night in their final game of the season.

The Broncos (8-46) struck first in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Singles by Kelly Scribner and Casandra Padilla put runners on first and second with one out. Jordan Newell doubled in Sarah Mosher, who pinch ran for Scribner, to plate the first run and Rochelle Rivera hit a sac fly to score Padilla.

The Cardinal (36-17) got a run back in the bottom of the second scoring an unearned run to cut the lead in half.

Jamie Wallis led off the third with a single and scored on an infield hit by Chiara Biagini to give the Broncos a 3-1 advantage.

Stanford took control of the game by scoring six runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-3 lead. Back-to-back homeruns by Jenna Rich and Cassandra Rouland put the Cardinal in front 4-3 and knocked starter Ciara Gonzales out of the circle. With two out Leah White singled in another run and Kayla Bonstrom drove in a pair with a basehit off reliever Carissa Theis.

Both starters exited the game without recording an out in the third inning.

Gonzales stretched her scoreless innings streak to 17 2/3 by escaping a first-and-third no-out jam in the first inning then allowed an unearned run in the second. She allowed five hits, four runs, three earned, with a walk in two-plus innings and fell to 3-13.

Stanford's Teagan Gerhart gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits and was removed after Wallis' leadoff single in the third. Nyree White pitched four scoreless innings allowing five hits with three strikeouts to get the win (3-1).

Wallis had three hits, including her fourth double of the season, and Scribner had a pair of hits to pace the Broncos attack.
