Softball Beats Army To Earn Split Sunday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Santa Clara softball picked up its first win of the season 6-4 over Army after falling to Binghamton 8-3 Sunday morning.

GAME 1
A pair of big innings lifted the Bearcats (3-1) to victory. They scored three in the second and then four in the fourth after the Broncos had come back to tie the score.

The fourth began with a walk that came around to score on an infield single. With two down and just the one run in, Hanna Lyons, who finished the day 2-for-3, came up with a two-run single and
came around to score on an error.

Binghamton's first three runs came three batters into the second inning. After a pair of singles by Lauren Martinez and Alex Guay, Makayla Alvarez hit a three-run home run to right.

Alvarez scored a pair of runs to go with her three RBIs and added a pair of walks. Marissa Braito also had two hits and scored a run with an RBI out of the leadoff spot.

Chelsea Howard (1-0) tossed 4 no-hit inning of relief with a walk and a strikeout to pick up the win after starter Morgan Bienkowski lasted 3 innings and allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits with two walks.

The Broncos (1-5) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Alexandria Hale hit a sacrifice fly bringing in Regan Dias.

They would add two more in the third to briefly draw even. Sammy Needham doubled to left with one out and Hale brought her home with a single. Pinch runner Morgan Modesto would swipe third and score the second run of the inning on an error.

Hale had two RBIs with Needham adding two hits and a run scored.

Dias (0-1) started in the circle and got the loss in 3 2/3 innings. She surrendered seven runs, six earned, on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

GAME 2
The Broncos (1-6) got off to quick start and never trailed the Black Nights (3-6) after scoring a pair in the first. Needham smacked a double to right after a walk to Dias and Hale knocked in her third run of the day with a single to left. Taylor Burns brought home the second run of the frame with an infield single.

After Army had fought back to even the score at 2-2 after two innings, Needham led off the third with a double and Hannah Russell brought her home two batters later with a single to get Santa Clara right back on top.

Morgan Modesto started another two run inning with a leadoff homer to right center in the fourth. Hale again came through with an RBI single later in the inning.

Needham finished with three hits and scored a pair of runs while Hale was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Dias added two hits and a pair of walks with two runs scored and an RBI and Jordan Dawkins also knocked two base hits.

Lauren Anderson (1-3) picked up her first collegiate win by tossing 4 innings of two-run ball. She allowed seven hits with three walks and a strike out. Lauren Schiek got her first save by throwing the final 3 inning.

The Black Knights mounted a comeback attempt and cut the deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth with the help on an unearned run but couldn't draw even and left the tying run on base.

Grace Mattimore was 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Army's offense. Taylor Livingston added three hits and a run scored as well.

Taylor Drayton (0-3) started and got the loss in 2 1/3 innings, surrendering three runs n six hits with two walks and a strikeout.
